Meet BSCM’s 2023-2024 Intern, Katie Brackman!

Katie Brackman is currently pursuing a BA in Creative Writing at the University of Washington. She was born and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia with one foot in the forest and a book in both hands. She followed her love of words out west, where she splits her time between her studies and fictional worlds. Katie intends to pursue a career in publishing and is excited to get a behind the scenes look at all the steps required to get a book onto the shelf. When she’s not surrounded by words, Katie can be found gazing at mountains and occupying the corners of coffee shops.

Interning at BSCM was my first in-depth excursion into publishing, and I’m so glad it was! Britt is such a supportive mentor, and she created a work environment where I was always encouraged to ask questions not only about the tasks at hand, but about the ever-changing industry and how it’s working to be more inclusive and diverse in both the stories it represents and the people behind the production of so many amazing works. I also learned about the different roles within the industry so I can find what I’m most interested in doing. With Britt’s guidance and tutelage, I had the freedom to partake in a wide variety of projects every week, sharpening my skills in editing, marketing, social media, and storytelling that I’ll take with me in the long run, as well as network with industry professionals and learn about their craft. Being at BSCM helped me realize that I wanted to pursue a career as either a literary agent or an editor, as well as how through publishing, I’m able to combine my other academic passions, including screenwriting, film/TV production, and creative writing.” — Former BSCM Intern through the University of Washington, Current Agency Intern, Shea Formanes

This was such an amazing experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor than Britt! She’s so knowledgeable about the publishing industry and graphic novels and I know that everything I learned throughout the year will only benefit me in the future. Although this was a remote internship, I never felt like I was losing out on experience; Britt always made me feel connected to the role and created a warm and welcoming work environment where I felt supported in my position as an intern. She was wonderful about encouraging me to ask questions as well as giving me clear and thoughtful answers. I came into this hoping to learn more about the publishing industry to see if it was the right space for me, and after having this role and working under Britt, I can say that it is. Thanks to her and this opportunity, I now feel like I have the skills and confidence to go out into the publishing world and be successful! Britt is truly one of the best mentors anyone could have, and I feel so lucky to have gotten to be part of BSCM.” — Former BSCM Intern through the University of Washington, Alyssa Tuffey
